SUMMARY:Gurindji Freedom Banners
DESCRIPTION:Mumkurla-nginyi-ma parrngalinyparla – from the darkness into the light. \nThe Gurindji freedom banners are a collection of 10 hand-painted banners created in 2000 by the Gurindji to share the community’s version of the historic 1966 Wave Hill walk-off. The walk-off\, or Gurindji strike\, led by Gurindji man Vincent Lingiari was an important event in Australia’s land rights movement. Many of the 35 Gurindji people involved in the banner-making project were participants in the walk-off. \nAt some stage\, banner eight\, Ngumpittu nguwula junypa wanyjarnana (Two young men dancing)\, went missing. In July 2025\, a banner-making workshop was held in Daguragu and Kalkarindji to reconstruct the missing banner and restore the collection.

SUMMARY:25th Biennale of Sydney: Rememory
DESCRIPTION:Campbelltown Arts Centre is an exhibition partner of the 25th Biennale of Sydney: Rememory\, curated by 25th edition Artistic Director Hoor Al Qasimi. \nA means of revisiting\, reconstructing\, and reclaiming histories that have been erased or repressed\, Rememory signifies the intersection of memory and history\, where recollection becomes an act of reassembling fragments of the past—whether personal\, familial\, or collective. The 25th edition of the Biennale connects the delicate space between remembering and forgetting. By engaging with Rememory\, artists will highlight marginalised narratives\, share untold stories\, and inspire audiences to rethink how memory shapes identity\, belonging\, and the creation and celebration of new communities and connections.

SUMMARY:South West Biennial 2026: Tracework
DESCRIPTION:Bunbury Regional Art Gallery presents South West Biennial 2026: Tracework\, a landmark new exhibition that positions the South West as a vital centre for contemporary art. Anchored at BRAG and extending across six partner venues throughout the regions\, the Biennial invites audiences to move through a connected cultural landscape shaped by place\, memory and making. \nConceived as both a map and a meeting point\, Tracework brings together artists from across Australia’s south western regions alongside nationally and internationally recognised practitioners. The exhibition explores the idea of the trace — as mark\, imprint\, memory and connection — revealing how every creative gesture carries evidence of encounter: between artist and material\, people and place\, past and present. \nWith BRAG at its epicentre\, these connections ripple outward throughout the regions – between communities\, generations\, and their environments. Tracework encourages visitors to explore the visible and invisible threads that bind the region together. \nCurated by Dr Michael Bianco and Dionne Hooyberg\, the Biennial includes a major survey of works by 28 regional artists\, alongside solo and collaborative projects by Jacobus Capone\, Olga Cironis\, Amber Cronin and Tom Borgas\, Sharyn Egan\, and Andy Quilty.

DESCRIPTION:Ruins in Reverse is a sculptural and sound-based installation by Carly Fischer inspired by the former Beechworth Asylum and her great-grandmother’s 50-year life spent institutionalised for ‘talking to the furniture’. SUMMARY:New South Vol. 2: Recent Sculpture & Installation Art
DESCRIPTION:New South Vol. 2 presents recent examples of sculpture and installation art from across Southern Australasia. Bringing together an intergenerational group of 17 artists\, the exhibition offers a snapshot of current sculptural practice and the ideas shaping it today. \nA key theme of the exhibition is inter-relations\, what happens between objects\, materials\, built environments and viewers. The artworks are presented together in shared space\, allowing them to interact\, overlap and influence one another. These encounters invite visitors to notice new connections and meanings as they move through the exhibition. \nNew South Vol. 2 is a follow-up of two earlier exhibitions hosted by Hazelhurst Arts Centre\, South (2014)\, which featured artists from Australia\, Mexico and South Africa\, and New South (2024)\, which focused on contemporary painting from southern Australia.

SUMMARY:The ArtHITects (Gary Carsley and Ren Jie Teoh): C*Town Conservatory
DESCRIPTION:C*Town Conservatory reimagines the history and architecture of the conservatory — once a symbol of aristocratic prestige and colonial exploitation of the natural world — as a contemporary\, inclusive space for community\, reflection\, and creative exchange. \nConfabulated by The ArtHITects (Gary Carsley and Ren Jie Teoh)\, this immersive installation transforms the glass-walled foyer of Campbelltown Arts Centre into a fantastical\, illusionistic environment reflecting on its 20-year history of commissioning artwork. Linking the black box of the performance space to the white cube of the gallery spaces\, the C*Town Conservatory acknowledges the role of this unique nexus in the programming of Campbelltown Arts Centre ahead of its forthcoming capital expansion. \nDrawing on the conservatory’s traditions of wonder and contemplation\, the project embeds the history of the CAC’s diverse cross-media programming into ornamental QR codes\, evoking breeze-block patterns of Australian suburbia and global architectural traditions. \nAudiences are invited to scan the QR codes embedded in the artwork to discover and learn about the commissioned programs at Campbelltown Arts Centre dating back to 2005. \n\n\n\n\n Add to calendar

SUMMARY:A Long Thread of Attention
DESCRIPTION:Fox Jensen McCrory presents A Long Thread of Attention\, bringing together the work of New Zealand’s most acclaimed painter Colin McCahon alongside celebrated Australian painter Aida Tomescu. \n“Not in a million years could I have predicted a phenomenon like McCahon. In fact\, I went to the Ivan Dougherty show on its last day\, at the insistence of my friends. I went with zero expectations and that visit changed everything. Finally\, there was a painter\, a near contemporary\, (he passed two or so years earlier) who did everything I wanted painting to do\, aimed at profound content\, connected everything I was drawn to”. \nAida Tomescu will give a talk in the gallery on Saturday the 2nd May at 11am.

SUMMARY:A Journey in Miniature
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by an artistic practice that span centuries\, A Journey in Miniature celebrates the enduring allure of small-scale art—from the illuminated manuscripts of the medieval world to the intimate portrait miniatures of the Romantic era\, and into the vibrant diversity of contemporary practice. \nPresented by the Australian Society of Miniature Art\, this exhibition brings together an extraordinary range of works that demonstrate the precision\, skill and imagination demanded by the form. Working within the discipline of scale—where every detail is heightened and nothing can be overlooked\, artists explore subjects limited only by their imagination\, across painting\, drawing\, printmaking and mixed media. \nAbout the Australian Society of Miniature Art (AMSA) \nThe Australian Society of Miniature Art (NSW) Inc. was founded in 1985 when there was a growing worldwide renaissance of miniature art and interest in its contemporary expression. \nOne of the aims of the society is to introduce the viewing public to the background of the field and show the development of the miniature and its place in today’s world. Many of the artists are professionals of long-standing who reside Australia-wide. \nASMA has held an Annual National Awards exhibition for over 20 years\, which is open to any Australian artist working in miniature.

SUMMARY:Kate McKenzie Lewis: Ember
DESCRIPTION:Bett Gallery presents Kate McKenzie Lewis’s debut solo exhibition\, Ember. This series examines bushfire-affected landscapes\, capturing moments between destruction and renewal. SUMMARY:Group Exhibition: Stockmen
DESCRIPTION:It is with a view to capturing the totality of the pastoral influence upon remote Australia that Stockmen brings a range of visual ideas together\, from dot painting to visionary landscapes. It is often said that contemporary art charts ideas of the future\, while in this exhibition it is possible to envisage the fullness of the lived experience of a quickly receding past. These artists offer a sense of just how much remote Australia has changed\, while grounding these changes in Country that remains ever present and within view. They remind us that pastoralism did not destroy ancestral practices and perceptions but created new ways of embedding them in contemporary life.

SUMMARY:Natalya Hughes: The Interior
DESCRIPTION:Can we use the talking cure to solve society’s ‘problem’ with women? \nThe Interior invites audiences into an exaggerated consultation room\, playfully furnished for psychoanalysis. Natalya Hughes’s immersive installation—combining sculptural seating\, richly patterned soft furnishings\, and uncanny objets d’art\, nestled around a hand-painted mural—generates a stimulating space to unpack our collective and unconscious biases. \nInterested in the role of women and their historical absence from positions of power\, Hughes’s part-professional\, part-domestic setting plays with gendered power dynamics between public and private space. The bespoke couches that dot the gallery take their lush contours from the shapes of the female body\, while motifs of eyes\, rats\, and snakes from Freud’s patient case studies ripple over their detailed upholstery. \nAudiences are invited to recline and be enveloped\, soothed and held\, by the furniture’s womanly forms\, while taking turns playing analyst and patient. Throughout this bodily encounter\, The Interior offers a space where women can be reimagined on different terms in a post-# MeToo world. \nThe Interior is a travelling exhibition organised by the Institute of Modern Art (IMA) and toured by Museums & Galleries Queensland. \nThe Interior has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council\, its arts funding and advisory body; the Australia Council’s Contemporary Touring initiative; The Queensland Government through Arts Queensland; the Fini Artist Fellowship through the Sheila Foundation; Queensland College of Art\, Griffith University; Creative Art Research Institute\, Griffith University; and Porter’s Paints\, New Farm. \nNatalya Hughes is represented by Milani Gallery\, Brisbane\, and Sullivan+Strumpf\, Sydney.

SUMMARY:Amanda Bennetts: Fragmented\, divided—yet whole
DESCRIPTION:Fragmented\, divided—yet whole brings together recent works by Amanda Bennetts that use time as both material and metric for understanding the body. In Bennetts’ practice\, time is not linear but lived. It is stretched\, slowed\, ruptured\, and suspended by the realities of living in a body in flux that refuses normative rhythms and constantly requires new forms of understanding. \nAcross these works\, Bennetts moves between different geographies and states of being. These spaces and the temporalities that govern them rarely align neatly. Instead\, they accumulate as fragments of data\, sensory impressions and embodied memory. \nFragmented\, divided—yet whole considers the body as a site where multiple timelines converge and how these temporal overlaps shape what it means to inhabit a body.

SUMMARY:Cobi Cockburn: Primary Lines
DESCRIPTION:Cobi Cockburn’s solo exhibition Primary Lines considers light as material\, reducing the visual language to two elemental forces: light and line. Shaped through encounter\, the works unfold as perceptual fields rather than fixed objects. \nLight operates as an active agent – revealing and erasing in equal measure – producing fleeting moments of clarity while dissolving stable form. Line\, traditionally a marker of direction and boundary\, becomes contingent\, shifting with light and the viewer’s position. Together\, they generate spatial conditions that resist resolution\, where meaning is not prescribed but discovered through experience.

SUMMARY:Jo Darvall: Changing States
DESCRIPTION:“Changing States builds on ideas developed during my 2024 Edith Cowan University and Western Australian Parliament Artist in Residence program\, as well as my recent group exhibition Paper Thin\, Skin Deep at Mundaring Arts Centre 2026 curated by Annette Peterson. The work explores what it means to inhabit a body—through material\, metaphorical\, and cultural layers of skin. \nWith over thirty years of experience across Australasia\, including a decade working in Singapore\, my practice examines my relationship to place within the Western Australian landscape. Originally from Melbourne\, where I studied at the Victorian College of the Arts and majored in Printmaking\, this exhibition marks a full-circle return—bringing together the journeys and experiences that have shaped my work internationally.” \n– Jo Darvall\, 2026

SUMMARY:Jenn Rowe and Jaimie Klum: Where Matter Breathes
DESCRIPTION:Where Matter Breathes brings together artists Jenn Rowe and Jaimie Klum in a powerful exploration of body\, land\, material\, and spirit. Through sculpture\, installation\, photography\, and wall-based works\, the exhibition traces how both inner and outer worlds are formed\, transformed\, and made visible through matter. \nDrawing on distinct yet complementary practices\, Rowe and Klum use material as a way of thinking through connection\, fragility\, adaptation\, and survival. Rowe\, informed by her Trawlwoolway heritage and deep relationship to Country\, works with found and reclaimed natural materials – driftwood\, shells\, feathers\, bones\, and reeds – to create sculptural forms that evoke ecological and spiritual interconnection. Klum responds through industrial and synthetic materials\, shaping abstract forms that give expression to psychological and embodied states that are often felt but unseen. \nTogether\, their works create a dialogue between landscape and psyche\, nature and self. Across the exhibition\, material becomes alive with memory\, tension\, and transformation – inviting viewers to consider how we are shaped by what we hold\, lose\, and become.

SUMMARY:Fiona Longhurst: 5 7 3 Float Fall Petals 10 Trees
DESCRIPTION:For over three decades\, Fiona Longhurst has cultivated a distinctive visual language grounded in pattern\, repetition\, and colour. A longstanding artist in the Arts Project Australia (APA) studio since 1991\, her practice has evolved with quiet persistence\, producing a compelling body of work. \nHer intricate fields of mark-making are animated by recurring motifs – floral forms\, delicate compositional arrangements\, and text. Through intuitive layering and patterning\, Longhurst builds a personal visual lexicon. \nThis exhibition celebrates Longhurst’s enduring contribution to the APA studio and the broader contemporary art landscape\, offering insight into an artist whose evolving practice is defined by tenderness\, a nuanced use of colour\, and a quietly compelling sense of introspection. \nCurated by Jo Salt.

SUMMARY:Archibald\, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Archibald\, Wynne and Sulman Prizes delight and surprise audiences every year with fresh presentations of contemporary Australian painting and sculpture. \nAt its heart\, the Archibald Prize is about storytelling. Who are the people our artists have chosen to paint and what do their portraits reveal to us? In this exhibition\, Australian and New Zealand artists use portraiture to share the beauty and complexity of our times. \nThe Wynne Prize celebrates two major categories of art: Australian landscape painting and figurative sculpture. Diverse representations of our country appear alongside the variety and ingenuity of contemporary sculpture. The Sulman Prize is for subject painting\, genre painting or a mural project. \nEach year\, the trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales judge the Archibald and Wynne Prizes and invite a guest artist to judge the Sulman. In 2026 the Sulman will be judged by renowned artist Del Kathryn Barton. \nThis must-see annual exhibition of finalists and winners has become a fixture in our artistic calendar. A single ticket gives you access to see all three of these prestigious awards. \nHave your say by voting for your favourite portrait in the ANZ People’s Choice award for the chance to win $2000. \nDon’t miss Young Archie\, a free display in the Kaldor Hall on the ground level\, showcasing art by the next generation of artists\, aged 5 to 18. Plus\, grab a free self-guided children’s trail in the Archibald\, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2026 exhibition.

SUMMARY:Little Orange Studio x AGNSW: Pet Palace
DESCRIPTION:Presented alongside the Archibald\, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2026 at the Art Gallery of NSW\, this salon-style wall features portraits of a different kind\, not of people\, but of other beings deserving of our affection – beloved pets\, spirit guides and creature friends. Created by the artists of Little Orange Studio in Campbelltown\, Pet Palace is a celebration of the unbreakable bonds (and knowing looks) between people and animals. \nFor the Little Orange Studio artists – and for many of us – these relationships are a source of daily care\, companionship and reciprocal support. The mural includes distinguished portraits of pets who have crossed the rainbow bridge\, eldritch beings and animals in everyday life. Campbelltown’s parks and rivers appear as meeting places for dogs and ducks alike. \nFramed by the Grand Courts’ classical archways and set against a painted backdrop of sea and garden-inspired shapes\, Pet Palace is both a playful twist on historical portrait displays and a characterful homage to all those who guide\, comfort and walk beside us.

SUMMARY:Wayne Youle: Back in Five
DESCRIPTION:Back in Five surveys twenty years of one of Aotearoa’s most bold and distinctive contemporary artists. \nWayne Youle’s sculptural practice charts the passage of time not just as a theme but as a material that shapes\, stretches\, and reframes meaning. With his trademark playfulness and wit and working across a broad range of media\, schoolboy pranks meet sharp cultural critique. Youle tackles big ideas—masculinity\, fatherhood\, colonial legacy\, and bicultural identity—while drawing on the humour and irreverence of his younger self. \nDeveloped in partnership with The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū.

SUMMARY:Ans Westra: Jeetje
DESCRIPTION:Jeetje is an invitation to re-examine the work of Ans Westra (1936–2023)\, one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most significant documentary photographers. Jeetje [pronounced YAY-chuh] is a Dutch expression of surprise — and\, in this case\, delight. It sets the tone for this selection drawn from Westra’s vast archive of funny\, tender\, and poignant photographs spanning the 1960s to the 1980s. From poetry readings in graveyards to spirited street protests\, from competitive dog shows to karate kids on skates\, these are scenes that feel as though they could have been captured yesterday. \nThe Dowse Art Museum shared a longstanding relationship with Westra\, from staging her first retrospective in 1972 to hosting her as an artist in residence. Jeetje extends this relationship\, revealing a side of Westra’s practice seldom seen by the public. SUMMARY:Alberto Garcia-Alvarez: Nothing is Finished While I Am
DESCRIPTION:In the current issue of recently relaunched Art News magazine\, writer Dina Jezdic observes that “to write a preview of [Alberto Garcia-Alvarez’s] show is to confront the particularity of a practice that rejects the very idea of the preview. \nNo new body of work finished in preparation for exhibition. No theme declared in advance. Only this: 50 years in the same studio\, sunk into the slope of a garden\, light flooding in from high windows – and the continuous act of making that happens inside it.” \n“All my life is here”\, 98-year-old Alberto says\, when she asks about the way a work from the 1970s might appear alongside something made last week. \n“He means it structurally”\, Jezdic explains. \n“The experience of a life does not divide itself into periods\, does not respect the historian’s desire for chronology\, the collector’s desire for series\, the critic’s desire for development. A canvas begun in one decade may be taken up again in another because the thinking it holds has returned – changed\, deepened\, made strange by distance.”
