SUMMARY:Gurindji Freedom Banners
DESCRIPTION:Mumkurla-nginyi-ma parrngalinyparla – from the darkness into the light. \nThe Gurindji freedom banners are a collection of 10 hand-painted banners created in 2000 by the Gurindji to share the community’s version of the historic 1966 Wave Hill walk-off. The walk-off\, or Gurindji strike\, led by Gurindji man Vincent Lingiari was an important event in Australia’s land rights movement. Many of the 35 Gurindji people involved in the banner-making project were participants in the walk-off. \nAt some stage\, banner eight\, Ngumpittu nguwula junypa wanyjarnana (Two young men dancing)\, went missing. In July 2025\, a banner-making workshop was held in Daguragu and Kalkarindji to reconstruct the missing banner and restore the collection.

SUMMARY:Ans Westra: Jeetje
DESCRIPTION:Jeetje is an invitation to re-examine the work of Ans Westra (1936–2023)\, one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most significant documentary photographers. Jeetje [pronounced YAY-chuh] is a Dutch expression of surprise — and\, in this case\, delight. It sets the tone for this selection drawn from Westra’s vast archive of funny\, tender\, and poignant photographs spanning the 1960s to the 1980s. From poetry readings in graveyards to spirited street protests\, from competitive dog shows to karate kids on skates\, these are scenes that feel as though they could have been captured yesterday. \nThe Dowse Art Museum shared a longstanding relationship with Westra\, from staging her first retrospective in 1972 to hosting her as an artist in residence. Jeetje extends this relationship\, revealing a side of Westra’s practice seldom seen by the public. SUMMARY:Kirtika Kain: Pitch
DESCRIPTION:Kirtika Kain has an ongoing interest in anti-caste movements and the experience of caste in the diaspora\, explored through material and studio processes. In her works\, gold\, bitumen\, and turmeric combine to create intricate and luminous surfaces that highlight the aesthetic and affective qualities of her chosen materials. \nThe tar used in each of these works carries a material history of extraction\, labour and transformation\, as well as a cultural history of ritual\, ceremony\, and medicine. The histories of the gold and turmeric used prominently in the works is equally rich and complex. Kain acknowledges these embedded histories while engaging in experimental processes that extend the cultural language of the materials. \nThe new works presented in Pitch reflect Kain’s background as printmaker. The two sides of the ambitious central work are essentially a plate and a print\, with the canvas side having acted as the printing plate for the hessian component. Similarly\, the smaller tar works that surround the significant scrolling work are produced as casts of other painted surfaces. In this way\, Kain’s studio becomes like an archive that continually creates itself. These processes are also alchemical\, dealing in transferal and transformation. \nPitch is a Murray Art Museum Albury exhibition presented in partnership with Campbelltown Arts Centre.

House of Gold offers fantastical environments\, intimate reflections on history and powerful spaces for contemplation. \nHouse of Gold is a 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art exhibition\, in partnership with Golden Dragon Museum Bendigo\, supported by The Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Global and touring nationally with Museums & Galleries of NSW. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia program.

DESCRIPTION:Jessie French’s exhibition\, Material Conditions: Systems Beneath Surfaces\, examines the industrial systems embedded within the materials that shape our inhabited spaces and their resultant environmental and ethical consequences. \nEstablished systems\, optimised for efficiency\, low cost\, and standardisation\, dictate how physical resources are produced\, circulated\, and utilised in our daily environments. Many of these materials rely on chemical additives including binders\, stabilisers and coatings to enable their rapid manufacturing. While engineered for efficiency and durability\, these materials are often impossible to repair or reintegrate into recycling or reuse cycles once they degrade. Over time\, these industrial systems have normalised the widespread use of materials that compromise human health and ecological stability. \nIn an era defined by environmental crisis and geopolitical tension over natural resources\, French positions material design as a critical cultural and environmental inquiry. By presenting functional materials as cultural artifacts\, Material Conditions invites us to look beyond the surface and consider the infrastructures\, responsibilities\, and possibilities embedded within the substances that surround us. \nThis project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia\, its principal arts investment and advisory body.

SUMMARY:42nd Annual Acquisitive Competitive Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Hervey Bay Art Society\, AKA Gallery 5\, proudly presents the 42nd Annual Acquisitive Competitive Art Competition. \nYes\, this exciting competition is now 42 years young – believe it or not! In 2026 the works will hang at Gattakers Art Space\, 311 Kent Street\, Maryborough between the 25th July and 3rd September. \nWe celebrate our collection of local and state-wide art with an award ceremony between 12 noon and 2 pm on Saturday 25th\,\, where.  Mr George Seymour\, Fraser Coast Mayor\, will present the awards.  The public are welcome from 2 pm onwards. All artwork is for sale and the 42nd is a must for anyone looking to add to his or her own collection while supporting local artists.  We encourage visitors to vote in the People’s Choice award.  The winner of this will be announced at the closing of the exhibition. The artwork on show is 2D in nature and explores categories including Land and Seascapes\, Australian Flora and Fauna\, Figurative and Portraiture\, Abstract and Miniature Paintings.  The Open Acquisitive section is always the highlight of the exhibition. \nWide Bay has seen many changes in 42 years and visitors can expect to encounter a vibrant art scene here.  Able to hold it’s own amongst the best there is\, the competition attracts a diverse range of works and has become immensely popular with locals and visitors alike. \nAdmission is free.
