SUMMARY:Gurindji Freedom Banners
DESCRIPTION:Mumkurla-nginyi-ma parrngalinyparla – from the darkness into the light. \nThe Gurindji freedom banners are a collection of 10 hand-painted banners created in 2000 by the Gurindji to share the community’s version of the historic 1966 Wave Hill walk-off. The walk-off\, or Gurindji strike\, led by Gurindji man Vincent Lingiari was an important event in Australia’s land rights movement. Many of the 35 Gurindji people involved in the banner-making project were participants in the walk-off. \nAt some stage\, banner eight\, Ngumpittu nguwula junypa wanyjarnana (Two young men dancing)\, went missing. In July 2025\, a banner-making workshop was held in Daguragu and Kalkarindji to reconstruct the missing banner and restore the collection.

SUMMARY:Wayne Youle: Back in Five
DESCRIPTION:Back in Five surveys twenty years of one of Aotearoa’s most bold and distinctive contemporary artists. \nWayne Youle’s sculptural practice charts the passage of time not just as a theme but as a material that shapes\, stretches\, and reframes meaning. With his trademark playfulness and wit and working across a broad range of media\, schoolboy pranks meet sharp cultural critique. Youle tackles big ideas—masculinity\, fatherhood\, colonial legacy\, and bicultural identity—while drawing on the humour and irreverence of his younger self. \nDeveloped in partnership with The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū.

SUMMARY:Ans Westra: Jeetje
DESCRIPTION:Jeetje is an invitation to re-examine the work of Ans Westra (1936–2023)\, one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most significant documentary photographers. Jeetje [pronounced YAY-chuh] is a Dutch expression of surprise — and\, in this case\, delight. It sets the tone for this selection drawn from Westra’s vast archive of funny\, tender\, and poignant photographs spanning the 1960s to the 1980s. From poetry readings in graveyards to spirited street protests\, from competitive dog shows to karate kids on skates\, these are scenes that feel as though they could have been captured yesterday. \nThe Dowse Art Museum shared a longstanding relationship with Westra\, from staging her first retrospective in 1972 to hosting her as an artist in residence. Jeetje extends this relationship\, revealing a side of Westra’s practice seldom seen by the public. Thanks to {Suite} Tirohanga and the Westra Estate.

SUMMARY:Jessie French: Material Conditions: Systems Beneath Surfaces
DESCRIPTION:Jessie French’s exhibition\, Material Conditions: Systems Beneath Surfaces\, examines the industrial systems embedded within the materials that shape our inhabited spaces and their resultant environmental and ethical consequences. \nEstablished systems\, optimised for efficiency\, low cost\, and standardisation\, dictate how physical resources are produced\, circulated\, and utilised in our daily environments. Many of these materials rely on chemical additives including binders\, stabilisers and coatings to enable their rapid manufacturing. While engineered for efficiency and durability\, these materials are often impossible to repair or reintegrate into recycling or reuse cycles once they degrade. Over time\, these industrial systems have normalised the widespread use of materials that compromise human health and ecological stability. \nIn an era defined by environmental crisis and geopolitical tension over natural resources\, French positions material design as a critical cultural and environmental inquiry. By presenting functional materials as cultural artifacts\, Material Conditions invites us to look beyond the surface and consider the infrastructures\, responsibilities\, and possibilities embedded within the substances that surround us. \nThis project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia\, its principal arts investment and advisory body.

SUMMARY:I Like the Wobbly Bits
DESCRIPTION:Opening: Thurs 3 Sept\, 6:00pm \nWhat do you get when you take a group of creatives and transport them to desert regions? Lots of delicious “wobbly bits“. That’s how recently deceased art world icon David Hockney is said to have described his relationship with the land and with drawing. But beneath the levity sits something larger. Art in the land transforms physical geography into a living\, spiritual archive. It bridges the material world and the human soul\, becoming a medium for ecological reverence and for the unseen forces of nature. \nThis group of artists working in drawing\, paint\, sculpture and the Land have been given the freedom to explore the depths of their responses to the sublime beauty of our desert regions in Far Western NSW.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Garden of Eden by Gregory Ladner
DESCRIPTION:After Ladner’s successful sold-out solo exhibition\, Hidden Figures\, in 2025\, Garden of Eden marks a significant new chapter in Gregory Ladner’s abstract practice\, presenting a vibrant body of work that expands his exploration of colour\, gesture and movement. \nThrough layered mark-making and luminous palettes\, Ladner creates immersive compositions that invite viewers into richly textured worlds of rhythm\, energy and discovery. Rather than depicting nature\, the exhibition draws upon the idea of Eden as a place of creation\, abundance and endless possibility. Intricate networks of line weave across dynamic fields of colour\, balancing spontaneity with careful composition and revealing new relationships with every viewing. \nGarden of Eden celebrates painting as an evolving process; one where every gesture contributes to a living\, ever-changing landscape of abstraction\, encouraging contemplation\, curiosity and imagination.
