“When I hear someone asking me: Is that a drawing!? I know I’ve done my job.” Dean

Dean Spinks

Dean Spinks is a Sydney-based photorealism artist who draws objects in excruciating detail using fine point marker pens, often taking 50-100 hours to complete a piece.

1. Dean, how did you get started?

Dean: “Originally a graphic designer, I turned to drawing as an escape from staring at a screen all day at my corporate job. From the second I put pen to paper, nothing else seems to matter. It wasn’t till I started drawing with pens though, that people really started to take notice of my work.”

2. How do you describe your work?

Dean: “Obsessed with the symmetry of the human face, the majority of my work is focused around larger-than-life portraits, but I’ve also struck a chord with many Australians with my crushed beer can series, as well as a series of Australia’s most beloved native animals.”
