Johnny, tell us about your artistic journey
I’ve been immersed in art since my childhood, but it was a drawing of Oriental Parade in Wellington in my mid-20s that set things in motion. That project was a turning point, revealing my unique talent for transforming photographs into detailed drawings. Since then, I haven’t stopped, continually pushing the boundaries of my skills and surprising myself with each new creation.
Tell us about your artistic style
My style is best described as hyper-realistic. I spend countless hours meticulously replicating photographs with pen and pencil, striving for perfection in every stroke. After years of focusing on buildings, I’ve recently shifted to drawing iconic retro items, expanding my offerings to include unique products like journals.
Are you earning from your art?
I am proud to say that my art is my livelihood, available exclusively through my online store. It’s the only place where authentic Johnny Spiller prints, and products can be purchased.
What feedback have you received so far?
My work often amazes people, frequently saying they can’t believe it’s a drawing. Many also feel a personal connection to my subjects, like my drawing of a retro C90 Cassette, which evokes nostalgia for many.
Do you have a day job?
I balance my artistic pursuits with my role as Head of Brand for a law firm. Both jobs complement each other, but I hope to become a full-time artist as my online business grows.
Any upcoming projects?
I’m excited about a new collaboration with PosterFactory to print my drawings on large timber panels. This venture aims to create custom art for architectural and interior design projects – a new chapter in my artistic journey.
