Yvette Fanciulli
“Looking for a pop of colour?”
Yvette is an Australian artist, from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast where she sells her art at Eumundi Market as well as online. She also teachs in-person workshops at Bribie Island and has recently added online workshop to her website.
“I have always been a creator. I did some artwork in the late 90’s but it stopped when I had a family. I’ve been painting for about 4 years now. I painted prolifically for about a year before I started showing and selling my art.”
How would you describe the style and themes of your work?
I’m an expressive mixed media artist, I love collage and layers of interest in my paintings, and as much colour as possible. I also love to add asemic writing which is a decorative form of illegible flowing text, leaving the meaning up to the viewer. I name all of my paintings after people, it gives them a personality and I find it has become a fun and quirky part of my process. I love painting abstract florals and have moved into underwater scenes as I’ve lived in Queensland most of my life and am surrounded by rainforest and reef.
Are you earning from your art?
I started selling my art at local markets and it has been really rewarding. The Original Eumundi Markets on the Sunshine Coast is where I decided I fitted in perfectly with my style of art. They are open Wednesday and Saturday and I have a permanent position on both days. I absolutely love the market life and I draw while I’m at my stall. I teach in person mixed media workshops and have an online store and also an online class.
What feedback have you received so far?
When people see my art, they instantly smile and I’m often told my art brings them joy, which is the ultimate compliment. It fills my cup to know that I can create some joy to others through my colourful work and this inspires me to continue my artistic journey.
Do you have a day job? Or are you a full-time artist?
I worked as a chef most of my life and thought painting was a fun hobby. Only dreaming that I could be the next Ken Done. It wasn’t until I lost my daughter in 2022 I decided I needed to find as much joy as possible in life and to follow my dream of becoming a fulltime artist, even though I was in my 50’s. Grief makes you look at life differently. I was seeking joy and painting was the best answer for me. I started painting every day and couldn’t stop, it was flowing out of me and the colours were bright and made me feel happy.
In October last year I quit my day job. It is a wonderful experience to be able to work as a full-time artist. I feel very fortunate that I can earn an income from my art. It took me a few years of working both jobs, but I’m so happy I kept moving towards my dream and I still have lots of ambitious art projects I want to do…..I’d love to be a Gorman designer!
Any upcoming projects?
I have a painting in the upcoming Pretty in Pink -Terra Noosa exhibition and charity auction presented by Studio One Noosa in September. Ive also just been a part of a fabulous collaboration with Desk Buds. They have just released 4 of my paintings on beautiful large desk mats.
