Susan Whitby
“I aim to capture the extraordinary beauty of the ocean, from the vibrant colours of a sunrise to the intricate patterns of breaking waves.”
Susan Whitby, an Australian photographer, has always been captivated by the beauty of nature – landscapes, seascapes, flora, and fauna. Her journey into ocean photography began as she sought to capture the awe-inspiring moments of dawn at the beach. Today, her work reflects her deep love for the natural world and the joy it brings.
“I began my photo journey during Covid, heading to the beach at dawn, and being outside while we could. I started with my iPhone, slowly getting closer to the water until I was knee-deep. Most mornings, I would arrive home drenched, drying my phone and seeing what shots I got.
The sudden death of my Mum during those COVID years made me painfully aware that life is fleeting, so I invested in an Aquatech water housing for my camera and fully immersed myself in the ocean.”
How many years have you been creating and showcasing your art?
I began my photographic journey heading to the beach at dawn, capturing the sun rising over the water. The sudden loss of my mum made me realize life is fleeting, so I invested in better equipment and fully immersed myself in ocean photography. Starting in my late 40s, this journey has brought me incredible joy and a deeper connection to nature.
How would you describe the style and themes of your work?
My greatest inspiration comes from the ocean. I strive to capture its extraordinarily beautiful shapes, colors, and light play. The intricate patterns of breaking waves and the exquisite colours of backlit waves are pure joy for me to share. My work aims to remind us of the beauty and wonder in the world we live in
